Like The Mona Lisa

Patrick Cannell © 1997
I keep a fish hook in my trousers
And, when I go round people's houses,
They never ask me where I've been to,
I couldn't tell them anyway.

I'm keeping one eye on my bank book,
I'll keep the other on the fish hook
But, if I had to choose between them,
Well then I really couldn't say.

I do some business down a manhole
And do some later up a flag pole.
I've got a brother on the Council
And that is all you need to know.

I do my duty in the fish shop
And leave some empties at the bus stop
And, if they ever ask directions,
I always tell them where to go.

Any one can smile like the Mona Lisa
Ah, but it wouldn't please you
Unless I faced the other way.

I keep my money in a lampshade,
Too high a wattage makes the ink fade.
I leave the Missus in a bike shed
And take a bicycle to bed.

Any one can smile like the Mona Lisa
Ah, but it wouldn't please you
Unless I faced the other way.

I stole my dinner from a seagull
And keep my finger on a ring pull.
I take a sick note when it suits me
'Cause every day's a holiday.
